Budimex has commenced construction of a bridge in Liepe, Germany

Budimex has commenced construction works at a bridge in Germany, close to the Polish border. The tender for demolition and construction of a new bridge in Liepe, Brandenburg, worth gross EUR 5.1 million, was awarded to the largest Polish general contractor at the end of 2021.

The investment implemented by Budimex is located in Liepe, Brandenburg federal state, Barnim county, in the eastern Germany. There is one of the largest boat lifts in Europe located nearby. The Oder-Havel Canal, i.e. a very important waterway, which connects the Oder River with the waterway network in Germany, passes through this city. This canal is used to transport steel parts of the bridge, which are manufactured in Szczecin. The first stage of the construction works is demolition of an old structure of the bridge.

“Our task is demolition of the old bridge and construction of a new one. This construction is a great challenge for us. Due to the nature conservation area, the transport of materials in the southern direction must be carried out via waterways. Currently, we are starting demolition works. The first step is cutting out the middle span of the load-bearing structure, which will then be lowered as a whole using a pontoon presses system. We only have 48 hours to cut the middle span out. This time is so short, because we cannot block the waterway for longer than this,” says Denis Buchta, the Construction Manager of Budimex Bau.

On the German market, Budimex SA works together with its subsidiary, Budimex Bau GmbH, in the areas of infrastructural, building and industrial construction. Budimex Bau got awarded with several subsequent tenders in those areas. Budimex is also present in Czech Republic and Slovakia. In December this year, the general contractor has begun works associated with construction of the D1/D4 motorway node in Slovakia.
