Budimex with the Top Builder 2023 award for the modernisation of the E-59 railway line Rokietnica - Wronki section

Budimex won the prestigious Top Builder award for the modernisation of the E-59 railway line Rokietnica - Wronki section. On Thursday 18 May at the Olympic Centre in Warsaw, the competition's jury selected the most innovative and high-quality projects in the Polish construction industry. This is another year in a row that Budimex has received the Top Builder award.

The reconstruction of track systems and associated infrastructure on the E-59 railway line between Rokietnica and Wronki, realised by Budimex, is part of the Poznań Główny - Szczecin Główny railway line. The contract with PKP Polskie Linie Kolejowe, worth a net value of PLN 556 million, included the modernisation of the track superstructure, overhead lines, power supply, repair and modernisation of engineering structures, as well as the reconstruction of platforms and level crossings.

The E-59 line is part of the international transport route from Malmo to Vienna, Budapest and Prague. It is the shortest connection from Scandinavia to Central and Eastern Europe and the Balkans.

- Thank you very much for this award. We are pleased that the realisation of this investment has been recognised, as it is of strategic importance for the whole of Polish rail transport. The modernisation was primarily aimed at making the transport offer more attractive to passengers by reducing journey times and improving journey comfort. At the same time, we would also like to thank our employees, partners and the ordering party, says Dariusz Taraszkiewicz, Area Manager of Budimex SA.

- We carried out all the work on this project with rail traffic running. The project included the construction of a bridge over the Warta River in Wronki. The innovation of this technical solution consisted in the use of a load bearing superstructure, the main element of which is a three-span composite structure in the form of a single steel (lattice) girder with a reinforced concrete joined plate. It is unique and the first construction of its kind in Poland applied by Budimex. The length of the bridge at the expansion joint axes is 193 metres, added Paweł Chlasta, Budimex SA Contract Director, who also received the award on behalf of the general contractor.

The scope of work carried out by the general contractor included:

  • building 76.383 km of track and 60 turnouts,
  • construction of overhead lines with supporting structures for the main line and main track with a total length of 82.02 km,
  • reconstruction of 2 railway stations: Szamotuły and Wronki and 3 stops: Pamiątkowo, Baborówko and Pęckowo,
  • reconstruction of 10 platforms with small architecture and adaptation to the needs of people with reduced mobility,
  • construction or reconstruction of: 17 bridges, 2 over-passes, 12 culverts, a retaining structure,
  • construction of 2 crossings under the tracks in the towns: Szamotuły and Wronki,
  • upgrade of 20 level crossings (3 in cat. A and 17 in cat. B).

The works carried out included:

  • 50 km of DSM displacement columns to reinforce the subgrade,
  • over 18 km of pre-cast reinforced concrete piles,
  • over 0.5 million tonnes of aggregates.

Top Builder is one of the most prestigious awards on the Polish market. It is an award for top-quality products: novelties and innovations, including proven material, technological and design solutions. The chapter also recognises design and implementation work and modern tools to improve company and project management. Also assessed are the buildings that stand out for the high quality of their designed architecture, often timeless form, reliability of workmanship, requiring high qualifications and industry specialisation, with the quality of the modern materials used in the buildings guaranteed by certificates and interesting pro-ecological solutions.

In 2022, Budimex received the Top Builder award for the realisation of the PKN Orlen Research and Development Centre in Płock.
