Budimex has commenced the next stage of the works at a bridge in Germany, close to the Polish border. Installation of the main girder of the load-bearing structures is one of the final stages of works within this project. The structure consisting of 7 steel segments and weighing almost 230 tonnes was delivered to the site by water. At the same time, it is one of Budimex’s five contracts on the German market.
The tender for demolition and construction of a new bridge worth gross EUR 5.1 million, was awarded to the largest Polish general contractor at the end of 2021. Budimex SA is carrying out this investment together with the Group’s subsidiary, Budimex Bau GmbH.
The new bridge is being built in Liepe, in the east of Germany. The Oder-Havel Canal, i.e. a waterway, which connects the Oder River with the waterway network in Germany, passes through this city. There is one of the largest boat lifts in Europe located near the structure. Thanks to the geometry of the bridge built by the Polish company, the pillars of the existing bridge structure hindering navigation will be removed. In addition, one of Brandenburg’s most important bike routes crosses the bridge in Liepe.
- This steel structure was first manufactured as 7 individual steel segments joined together to form a single unit. Weighing almost 230 tonnes, the structure was loaded onto a pontoon boat at a shipyard in Szczecin and transported by water to Liepe. With the help of 2 specially equipped large pontoon boats navigated by pusher boats the structure was lifted and positioned in the right place, before being put down and placed on the prepared abutments, says Michał Falkowski, Project Manager at Budimex Bau GmbH.
Due to the nature conservation area, all transport of materials and equipment to the south side had to be done by water. Girder transportation is the culmination point of the work of nearly 20 Budimex specialists and engineers.
Budimex is the largest construction company in Poland, having already completed thousands of modern investments all over the country. Currently the company employs over 7,000 people. One of the elements of development of Budimex is going outside Poland and expanding to European markets. On the German market, Budimex SA operates in the areas of infrastructural, building and industrial construction together with its subsidiary, Budimex Bau GmbH. Budimex Bau got awarded with several subsequent tenders in those areas. The general contractor will carry out, among other things, the reconstruction of the Oderberg and Wittstock bridges. Budimex is also present in Czech Republic and Slovakia. In December 2022, the general contractor began works associated with construction of the D1/D4 motorway node in Slovakia.
